We maintain that even with the present financial challenges facing the UK higher education sector our universities ARE bastions of soft power, if only someone would measure it! You would not believe the difficulty we had writing this article even with the advent of AI, because very little of UK soft power is in fact documented online – an own goal for the UK if ever we saw one. Particularly as soft power plays an increasingly critical role in global diplomacy and economic relationships, particularly for the UK, a long-standing leader in international education.
The concept of soft power—defined as the ability to influence others through attraction and persuasion rather than coercion—is especially relevant in the context of international graduate outcomes and destinations. Understanding the destinations and career trajectories of international graduates returning to their home countries is vital for the UK to bolster its global influence and foster deeper economic ties.
