Trouble ahead for UK Secure English Language Testing

In a surprise move, the UK Home Office announced in August 2024 its plans to move away from the current Secure English Language Testing (SELT) model. The office has initiated a tender for a single provider to develop and administer a dedicated Home Office test, with the contract estimated at £1.13 billion.

The timing of the announcement raised questions about whether the government was launching the tender discreetly, as it coincided with the holiday season when much of the English Language sector seemed unaware of the tender’s existence.
