Australia can learn from the UK’s dependant visa legislation
Australia looks increasingly likely to follow the United Kingdom in restricting the ability of international students to bring their families with them. Reports in The Australian suggest the Albanese government is preparing a significant tightening of student migration rules, including restrictions on family members, alongside measures targeting onshore applications, course switching, and movement from higher education into vocational education. Importantly, postgraduate research students are expected to be exempt from the dependant restrictions, alongside government-sponsored students and several other groups.
