Get out of Jail Free

Did the UK government effectively give UK universities a “get out of jail free card” when former Education Minister Rt Hon Gavin Williamson wrote to the Office for Students (OfS) in the autumn of 2019, his message introduced a challenge to a sector still celebrating the reintroduction of post-study work visas for international students? In his letter Williamson stressed the importance of ensuring that international students receive a “world-class experience,” emphasizing the need for integration on campus, mental health and wellbeing support, employability skills, and assistance in securing employment in the UK or their home country.

Williamson also highlighted the necessity of public transparency, urging the OfS to publish detailed data on international student outcomes, including those studying entirely outside the UK, and to use this data to inform its quality assurance framework. His directive underscored the importance of aligning higher education with measurable outcomes and accountability.
